Have You Ever Been in a Hotel Which Caught on Fire?

The Oban Inn is still operating as a spa and hotel/ resort. But, you won’t see the old building. It was destroyed in a fire, as reported below.

I was staying at a hotel (not this one) which caught on fire. We had just fallen asleep and I don’t remember how late it was. We woke up because there was a lot of traffic in the hallways and I could hear people knocking on the doors.… Read the rest

The Oldest Store in Town

This is not open now, as so many small and local businesses are shut down. But, they were selling coffee. The building needs some TLC but it isn’t abandoned. I like the old stops along main streets in small (very small in this case) towns. One thing I noticed here were the birdhouses nailed up on the roof (I’m sure there is a correct word for that part of the building, I just don’t know it).… Read the rest

Kevin McElheran’s Abandoned Church Photo

I tried to find the photographer, Kevin McElheran online. No luck, just more abandoned or broken links. I did find a description which was posted with another copy of the same photo, on two other sites. So, some background information about how the photo was taken. But, I still don’t know what happened to Kevin McElheran from Calgary, Alberta.… Read the rest

Across the Street from the Bank Ruins in Thunder Bay

I noticed a ghost sign on a building across the street from the burned out ruins of the CIBC bank building in Thunder Bay. I had looked up the bank on Google Street View and noticed the area looked old and run down. It has seen better times I’m sure.

The building with the ghost sign has been known as the Roy Building at some time in its history.… Read the rest

Canadian Vintage Postcards

I have been a history fan since the day I first noticed old buildings with the carved and sculpted stonework, the majestic columns and the extras, like gargoyles. My Mother loves antiques. We still have some of the massive pieces of furniture which she told me were called Canadiana, over 100 years old made from trees far older than that even.… Read the rest

Lighthouses

Note – This was originally posted to a friend’s site which has been taken down. The links have not been checked since 2015.

What is it about lighthouses that draws people? People collect lighthouses figurines. People paint and draw lighthouses. People will stop to photograph a lighthouse even when there could be something else more interesting which they did not even notice in the shadow of that mystical, lonely, stark looking building poking the sky.… Read the rest

The 4 Strangest Cryptids – Weird Worm

While you might be wondering what exactly a cryptid is, it’s likely that you have heard of a Cryptid before: Bigfoot, the Loch Ness monster, Crab People and so forth. Cryptids are any sort of animal or creature that has not been proven to be real. Some have been seemingly found in the wild, while others are nothing more than myths.
